Mongolian Membership in UNESCO

Unesco & Mongolia 2014/10-02 ・ 5773

Founded in 1945, the mission of UNESCO, as a specialized agency of the United Nations, is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. The vision articulated in the preamble of the Constitution to construct the defenses of peace in the minds of men and women remains a paramount endeavour of the Organization.

Under the current Medium-Term Strategy (2008-2013), UNESCOs overarching objectives are as follows:

It accords global priority in its work to Africa and to achieving gender equality, with specific interventions aimed at youth, least developed countries, and small-island developing states applying human rights based approaches.

Mongolia is one of 195 Member States of UNESCO and celebrated its 50th anniversary of membership in the Organization in 2012. Mongolia is served by the UNESCO Beijing Cluster Office for East Asian countries, with the help of a project office in Ulaanbaatar. In Mongolia, UNESCO works closely with governmental and non-governmental partners, including the Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO and other UN agencies.
